Obituary
Doris Griffin Anthony, affectionately known to all who loved her as Mamaw, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, at the age of 98, surrounded by her family.
Doris was born on July 28, 1927, at her family home in Maud, Texas, to Winonn and Bertha Griffin. Following the hardships of the Great Depression, she moved to California, where she worked in a pickle factory. It was there that she met the love of her life, James Nolan Anthony. Together they built a life centered on faith, love, and family.
After marrying, Doris devoted herself to being a homemaker. Although she had one daughter, her love and care extended through generations. She helped raise not only her daughter but also her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She found her greatest joy in caring for her family.
A devoted Christian, Doris attended Friendship Baptist Church until her health no longer allowed her to do so. Her steadfast faith carried her through life’s many joys and hardships. She was never defined by what life took from her, but by the remarkable strength, grace, and resilience she displayed in the face of adversity.
Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Nolan Anthony; her daughter, Nelda Smith; and her twin sister, Dorothy Seals.
She leaves behind a legacy of love through her family, including her granddaughters, Tonda Burnett and Janiece Smith, both of Maud, Texas; her great-grandchildren, Tasha Ward, Tami Jones, Jamie Atkinson, Amanda Lamb, Steven Atkinson, Corey Atkinson, and Kyle Burnett; her brother Leland Griffin and her nephew Ronnie Seals; along with 17 great-great-grandchildren, who will all continue to cherish her memory and carry forward the values she instilled in them.
Following cremation, a memorial service celebrating Doris’s life will be held at Friendship Baptist Church on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. All are welcome to attend.
