Obituary

Donald E Himes passed away peacefully the morning of January 16, 2024 at the age of 77.  Don was born in Ohio in 1946 to Harrold Himes and Janette (Schweizer) Himes, and spent most of his life in that state. He married in 1966 to Donna J (Hunt) Himes, and together they raised four children. Don was a registered land surveyor and he loved working outside. He also loved to bowl, read, play cards and play chess.  


He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Everett “Butch” Himes. 


Don is survived by his son Larry Himes, his wife Stacey, their daughters Linda and Tricia and granddaughter Calliope; his son Carey Himes; his son Ken Himes; his daughter Jenny Nagy, her husband Joseph Nagy, their daughter Jocelyn Rodriguez and her husband Jarvis, and son Gabriel; his brothers Stan Himes and Alan Himes and their families, and his ex-wife Donna Himes.

I will always remember Don for working countless hours to feed his family, rubbing his hands together with glee whenever the Browns scored, doing math in his head, printing words perfectly on his surveyor documents, and always giving me a headache whenever we played chess. He was a good man and a good brother.

My fondest memories of Don were at Christmas time and when we’d occasionally visit him and Donna at their home. At Christmas, he and Butch were extremely good at helping out their mom (my Aunt Janette) while Alan and Stan would stand by and watch, if they weren’t otherwise napping or watching a football game. This always puzzled me because Don was the brightest guy in the room. I guess Alan and Stan had something on him. When we’d visit Don and Donna at home, it was always very welcoming and warm. Larry, Carey, Kenny, and Jenny were always outside playing and generally broke at least one thing while we were there. I still remember one of the boys running through and breaking the screen door and Don’s reaction was complete chill. He was a very patient dad;) I was always impressed with Don’s intellect, patience, and his ability to carry on an engaging conversation about anything. But most importantly, I’ll remember the warm home he and Donna made for their kids.

Dear Family of Don Himes. I well remember Don as he was the first grandchild in the Arthur Schweizer family, my nephew. May he rest in peace after a long ordeal. I think I was around 10 years old when Don was born. His mom and dad brought him to the farm one time when I had the tractor out learning to drive. Don must have been 2 or 3 years old. I put him up on the farm tractor seat with me and gave him a ride that he seemed to enjoy. It was a novel experience for me, my first nephew and getting to drive the tractor, all at the same time!! One other memory was a visit by the Don Himes family (all 6) to our house in Vienna, VA. I will always remember them pulling out of our street to continue the family trip (quite likely on their way to Ohio). There was an arm waving goodbye out of every window of the station wagon, with the luggage on top. Just like you see in the movies. Those were the good old days.
