Gary LaRay Womack “Tuna”

March 11, 1957 – June 12, 2026

Gary LaRay Womack, affectionately known to family and friends as “Tuna,” passed away on June 12, 2026, in Texarkana, Texas, following a lengthy illness. He was 69 years old.

Gary was born on March 11, 1957, in Texarkana, Arkansas, to the late Alfred Joseph Womack Sr. (“AJ”) and Etta Lucille Womack.

For many years, Gary was employed by Womack Industries. He was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church.

Gary embraced his Cherokee heritage with pride and lived life with determination and passion. He loved attending  NASCAR races with family and friends. He earned a black belt in Karate. Gary was an accomplished pool shooter, and enjoyed participating in local marathons in his younger years. His competitive spirit, perseverance, and love for life’s challenges inspired those who knew him.

Above all, Gary treasured his family. He is survived by his sister Joy Womack Griffin of Irving, Texas, his brothers Ken Womack of Texarkana, Texas and James Womack of Texarkana, Arkansas, his daughter and son in law , Gretchen (Womack) Leonard and Franklin Leonard of Salisbury, North Carolina; his beloved grandchildren, Ava Whitaker, Pierceson Leonard, and Mallori Leonard, all of Salisbury, North Carolina. He also leaves behind many family members and cherished friends who will forever remember his strength, humor, and generous heart.

Gary was preceded in death by his father, Alfred Joseph Womack Sr. (“AJ”); his mother, Etta Lucille Womack; and his brother, Alfred Joseph Womack Jr. (“Ace”), and his two sons Dustin Womack and Kyle Womack. 

A Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 1501 W. 7th Street, Texarkana, Texas.

The family is truly grateful for Dierksen Hospice and Avir Nursing Home for their kindness and care.

Though he is no longer with us, Gary’s legacy of determination, faith, and love for his family will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
